Many of our staff members have wonderful stories about their path to caregiving. Today, we have a blog post from Stacey M, who’s been a Bureau Consultant with us for three years. Stacey shared the following story with us:

“After graduating with a certificate of business administration in 2017, I was in the process of looking for a job. I wasn’t looking for anything specific, but there was one advert that caught my eye. I had no work experience, but jumped at the chance to work in the aged care industry for Medcall and Care on Call.

I’ve been a Bureau Consultant for three years, and my passion for working with the elderly will always be extremely strong. I’ve realised the importance of taking care of the elderly, as they are our mothers, fathers and grandparents, and I know that one day I’d want the same level of care for myself.

When recruiting our caregivers for rest homes, hospitals & home care, the process includes a phone call, an interview and an induction. Applicants must have 6 months of recent experience in the field to ensure we have the best care staff allocated to cater to the needs of Elderly people.

As a consultant it’s been a pleasure to get to know the Medcall & Care on Call staff as well as our clients. I’ve built admirable friendships throughout my time here, and learned so many things about working as a bureau consultant. I’ve included some helpful tips for situations that may arise in the aged care industry:

  1. Always think before you speak/type.
  2. Begin and end every encounter on a positive note.
  3. Address clients by name.
  4. Keep your customers informed.
  5. Treat them with respect and empathy.
  6. Learn how to handle angry customers.
  7. Stay professional no matter what.
  8. Make customers feel valued and appreciated.
  9. Say "Thank you" and "Please" graciously.
  10. Follow up if necessary.”

Thanks for sharing your story Stacey! We love to hear about how our wonderful staff came into caregiving and aged care. Ngā mihi nui.
